Case Study: Enhancing Patient Examination Rooms with Height-Adjustable Carts
Developed in collaboration with staff at a large Midwestern research hospital, medViron’s height-adjustable Exam Room Carts are enhancing patient examination rooms by improving ergonomics, workflow efficiency and patient interaction. These versatile carts are a valuable investment for any healthcare facility.
After an initial presentation of the medViron Roam – a mobile, height-adjustable work surface – a designer contacted medViron to request a custom exam room cart. The existing computer carts in the exam rooms were awkward, a mess of cords and cables, and did not communicate to patients the quality of care of a world-renowned institution.
Over a year and a half during 2018 and 2019, four unique designs and prototypes were created and delivered. Hospital staff from both the I.T. and the planning and design department participated in evaluating these designs. The first carts were delivered in May 2019.
After 2 ½ years of use, nursing staff feedback drove a design refresh in 2022 that included an articulating keyboard tray, improvement of the height-adjustment activation, and easier access to computer hardware.
Exam Room Cart Features and Benefits
Ergonomic Design: Height-adjustable carts allow healthcare professionals to work comfortably, whether sitting or standing, reducing fatigue and the risk of injury. This ergonomic design ensures that clinicians can focus on patient care without physical strain.
Improving Care: I.T. staff provided a list of items they wanted included in the design, including monitor arms, signature pads, and a small printer. With these features, the carts provide access to electronic health records and other diagnostic tools. This setup enables quick and accurate documentation, improves efficiency, and improves patient care.
Mobility and Flexibility: Although this cart is tethered to the wall, they can be moved or angled to allow clinicians to face patients. This may foster better communication and more personal interaction. In other facilities, a wall-mounted terminal may force the clinician to turn from or walk away from the patient. These carts ensure that all necessary tools and information are always within reach. Mobility makes them a versatile solution for busy healthcare environments.
